In the realm of education, critical literacy and numeracy have emerged as essential tools for empowering students to critically engage with the world around them. These practices foster the development of critical thinking skills, media literacy, and numeracy proficiency, enabling students to challenge dominant narratives, decode biased texts, and make informed decisions based on data. However, the traditional approaches to critical literacy and numeracy often overlook the experiences and perspectives of queer individuals, perpetuating heteronormative and cisnormative assumptions that exclude and marginalize LGBTQIA+ students.

Queering critical literacy and numeracy involves incorporating queer theory into these practices, challenging the binary constructs of gender and sexuality, and embracing the fluidity and diversity of human experiences. By ng so, we can create more inclusive and equitable learning environments that empower all students, regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression.

Queering Critical Literacy

Traditional critical literacy practices focus on analyzing texts for power dynamics, bias, and social inequality. However, these approaches often fail to consider how gender and sexuality intersect with other forms of oppression, such as racism, classism, and ableism. By queering critical literacy, we can expand our understanding of power and oppression to include the experiences of LGBTQIA+ individuals.

Queer critical literacy involves analyzing texts for heteronormative and cisnormative assumptions, as well as for the ways in which these assumptions construct and maintain power imbalances. It also challenges the idea of a "neutral" or "objective" reader, recognizing that all readers bring their own subjective experiences and identities to the act of reading.

Queering Numeracy

Numeracy is typically understood as the ability to perform mathematical operations and solve mathematical problems. However, queering numeracy involves expanding this definition to include the ways in which numbers and data can be used to represent and reinforce social norms and power structures.

Queer numeracy involves analyzing data for bias, examining the ways in which mathematical models can perpetuate inequality, and challenging the assumption that scientific knowledge is always objective and neutral. It also recognizes the importance of using numeracy to advocate for social justice, such as by quantifying the impact of discrimination or by developing data-driven solutions to social problems.

Examples of Queering Critical Literacy and Numeracy

There are many practical ways to queer critical literacy and numeracy in the classroom. Here are a few examples:

* Analyzing LGBTQIA+ literature: Using texts written by and about LGBTQIA+ individuals can help students to understand the complexities of queer experiences and to challenge heteronormative assumptions. * Examining media representations of LGBTQIA+ people: Students can analyze media texts, such as news articles, films, and television shows, to identify and critique stereotypes and biased representations of LGBTQIA+ individuals. * Using data to advocate for LGBTQIA+ rights: Students can use quantitative and qualitative data to demonstrate the impact of discrimination against LGBTQIA+ people and to advocate for policies that promote equality and inclusion. * Challenging gender and sexuality assumptions in math problems: Teachers can create math problems that challenge traditional assumptions about gender and sexuality, such as by using gender-neutral language or by presenting problems that involve non-traditional family structures.

Queering critical literacy and numeracy is an essential step towards creating more inclusive and equitable education systems. By challenging heteronormative and cisnormative assumptions, we can empower LGBTQIA+ students to see themselves reflected in the curriculum and to develop the critical thinking skills they need to navigate a world that is often hostile to them. Through the integration of queer theory into our teaching practices, we can foster a deeper understanding of social justice issues and work towards creating a more just and equitable society for all.
